SUITE DEDICATED TO MARIA DE’ MEDICI
Maria, daughter of Joanna of Austria and Francesco I, despite many initial difficulties, finally managed to marry Henry IV, King of France and Navarre and then, after the king's death, she became queen regent of France for more than 20 years.
Like in the Uffizi Gallery, the ceiling is decorated with grotesques, a classic 16th-century decoration that, as reported by Benvenuto Cellini, originated in the Grottoes of the Esquiline Hill in Rome, which were the remains of Nero's Domus Aurea, discovered in 1480 and which immediately became popular among painters of the time.
The large coat of arms that stands out on the wall of this room symbolises the House of Medici and her husband Henry IV on one side, and France on the other. Maria ruled for many years after her husband’s death.
